The Picture of Dorian Gray tells the story of a beautiful young man whose desire to remain forever youthful leads him into a life of vanity, secrecy and moral decline. After having his portrait painted, Dorian wishes that the picture would age instead of him. As years pass, Dorian’s outward appearance remains untouched while the portrait begins to reflect the consequences of his actions. Influenced by the witty and cynical Lord Henry Wotton, he increasingly pursues pleasure without accepting responsibility for the harm he causes. Oscar Wilde’s only novel combines Gothic suspense, sharp social commentary and philosophical questions about beauty, morality and influence. Elegant, provocative and darkly imaginative, The Picture of Dorian Gray remains one of the most distinctive classics of the nineteenth century.
