The Great Gatsby is F. Scott Fitzgerald’s iconic portrait of ambition, wealth and illusion in the Jazz Age. Set in 1920s New York, the novel is narrated by Nick Carraway, who becomes drawn into the glamorous and mysterious world of his neighbour, Jay Gatsby. Gatsby’s extraordinary parties and carefully constructed image conceal a deeply personal longing: his desire to reunite with Daisy Buchanan, a woman from his past. As Nick observes the relationships around him, the glitter of wealth begins to reveal disappointment, carelessness and moral emptiness beneath the surface. Elegant, tragic and sharply observed, The Great Gatsby explores love, status, reinvention and the elusive idea of the American Dream. Its memorable characters and haunting atmosphere have made it one of the defining novels of twentieth-century American literature.
