Sense & Sensibility
by Jane Austen
Sense and Sensibility follows the Dashwood sisters, Elinor and Marianne, as they navigate love, family expectations and financial uncertainty after the death of their father. Though deeply close, the sisters approach life very differently: Elinor values self-control and practical judgement, while Marianne is guided by intense emotion and romantic idealism. As both women face disappointment and changing circumstances, Jane Austen explores the tension between feeling and reason without presenting either as sufficient on its own. The novel’s relationships are shaped by money, inheritance, reputation and the limited choices available to women. Witty, perceptive and emotionally satisfying, Sense and Sensibility is both a compelling love story and a sharp observation of society. Austen’s insight into character and relationships has kept the novel popular for generations.
