Notes From the Underground
by Fyodor Dostoevsky
Notes from Underground is a fierce and unsettling exploration of consciousness, freedom and self-contradiction. Fyodor Dostoevsky’s unnamed narrator is an isolated former civil servant who addresses the reader from his underground existence, reflecting bitterly on society, reason and his own failures. In the first part of the work, he attacks the idea that human behaviour can be reduced to logic or rational self-interest. In the second, he recalls humiliating episodes from his past that reveal his pride, insecurity, cruelty and desperate desire for connection. Darkly comic, psychologically intense and radically modern, Notes from Underground anticipates many of the questions later explored by existentialist writers. Its deeply unreliable narrator makes it one of Dostoevsky’s most challenging and influential works.
