Frankenstein tells the story of Victor Frankenstein, an ambitious young scientist whose desire to uncover the secrets of life leads him to create a living being. Horrified by what he has made, Victor abandons the creature, setting in motion a chain of loneliness, anger and tragedy. Mary Shelley gives both creator and creation powerful emotional voices, turning a tale of scientific experiment into a deeper exploration of responsibility, rejection, ambition and the need for companionship. The creature’s suffering raises difficult questions about who is truly monstrous. Dark, imaginative and intellectually rich, Frankenstein is a landmark of Gothic literature and early science fiction. More than two centuries after its publication, its questions about creation, ethics and human responsibility remain strikingly relevant.
