George Orwell’s 1984 is one of the most influential dystopian novels ever written. Set in a society dominated by constant surveillance, censorship and political control, the novel follows Winston Smith, a government worker whose growing doubts about the world around him lead him towards dangerous acts of independent thought. In Oceania, the ruling Party seeks control not only over people’s actions but also over their memories, language and understanding of truth. History can be rewritten, facts can disappear, and even private thoughts can become crimes. As Winston begins questioning the system and searching for genuine human connection, he discovers how deeply power can shape both society and the individual mind. Through concepts such as Big Brother, the Thought Police and Newspeak, Orwell examines propaganda, conformity, manipulation and the destruction of personal freedom. The novel asks unsettling questions about who controls information and what happens when truth becomes whatever those in authority declare it to be. Dark, intelligent and deeply thought provoking, 1984 remains remarkably relevant. Its warning about unchecked power and the importance of individual thought continues to resonate with readers across generations.
